چکیده

Land use/cover change has been recognized as an important component in regional and global climate. This study provides satellite observed impacts of agricultural activities on near surface climate. Land surface temperature products from NASA’s earth observing system (EOS) Terra and Aqua satellites are used. The intensive winter wheat field in the southern Great Plains greatly modifies the seasonal, diurnal and spatial characteristics of surface temperature. Over the period from August 2002 to July 2008, in terms of maximum daytime temperature the winter wheat field is 2.30 °C cooler than surrounding grasslands in the growing season, but 1.61 °C warmer after its harvest. The maximum cool and warm anomalies reach 4.16 °C and 3.35 °C, respectively. At night, the impacts of the wheat fields are less significant especially after harvest. Spatially, the wheat field has more uniform surface temperature than grassland. Over the 6-year period, the standard deviation of daytime land surface temperature over the wheat field is 0.72 °C smaller than grassland. The value of EOS observations for the land/climate interaction research is demonstrated, and similar analysis has potential to be applied to other land use/cover changes in different regions. Recent Weather Extremes and Impacts on Agricultural Production and Vector-Borne Disease Outbreak Patterns

We document significant worldwide weather anomalies that affected agriculture and vector-borne disease outbreaks during the 2010-2012 period. We utilized 2000-2012 vegetation index and land surface temperature data from NASA's satellite-based Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to map the magnitude and extent of these anomalies for diverse regions including the continental Uni...

Comparison of CERES-MODIS stratus cloud properties with ground- based measurements at the DOE ARM Southern Great Plains site

[1] Overcast stratus cloud properties derived for the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) project using Terra and Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data are compared with observations taken at the Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains site from March 2000 through December 2004. Retrievals from ARM surfa...

Management Implications of Global Change for Great Plains Rangelands

The Great Plains of North America encompass approximately 85 million ha (210 million acres) consisting of shortgrass, mixed-grass, and tallgrass prairie with about 60% of this area converted to crop agriculture and the remainder used primarily for livestock production. Large-scale gradients of precipitation (west to east, <30 to >100 cm; <12 to >40 inches) and mean annual temperature (north to ...

New dual-frequency microwave technique for retrieving liquid water path over land

[1] We present and demonstrate a new methodology for retrieving liquid water path over land using satellite-based microwave observations. As input, the technique exploits Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) brightness temperature polarization-difference signals at 37 and 89 GHz. Regression analysis performed on model simulations indicates that over variable atmospheric and s...

Remote sensing of surface energy fluxes at 10-m pixel resolutions

[1] Many applications exist within the fields of agriculture, forestry, land management, and hydrologic assessment for routine estimation of surface energy fluxes, particularly evapotranspiration (ET), at spatial resolutions of the order of 10 m. A new two-step approach (called the disaggregated atmosphere land exchange inverse model, or DisALEXI) has been developed to combine lowand high-resol...
